Although you may feel like you’re the only person in the world with rosacea, the truth is that rosacea is very common. It affects over sixteen million Americans every year. Most people are not familiar with this common skin condition, and even people who have it may make the mistake of thinking that they just blush easily or have a recurring case of acne. Though most rosacea sufferers share the same or similar symptoms depending upon the severity of their condition and whether they are taking steps to prevent and treat outbreaks, people who have granulomatous rosacea have breakouts that are very different; this is a rare and unusual form of the disease.

Granulomatous Rosacea

Granulomatous rosacea is a rare variation on this common skin condition; only about one in ten people who are diagnosed with rosacea will experience this particular variant. Although many people who have rosacea breakouts experience broken capillaries, flushing, or red, inflamed pustules that are scattered and diffuse, people who have granulomatous rosacea get hard bumps or nodules that form in clusters. Rather than being red, the bumps themselves have a yellowish brown color while the skin that the lesions appear upon can be red. The skin of the nodules is generally thickened. It is generally found in a symmetrical pattern and usually appears around the eyes or nose, though some may experience it around the mouth and chin area. There is some evidence that granulomatous rosacea appears along the base of infected hair follicles. This type of rosacea can often cause scarring, so it is important that the appropriate treatment is sought immediately.

Diagnosis of Granulomatous Rosacea

Although granulomatous rosacea is a variant of rosacea, it is often misdiagnosed because it shares characteristics with many non-rosacea skin conditions, including lupus and a variety of other granulomatous conditions. Although it generally appears in clusters it has been known to appear as a single lesion, which can confuse physicians who are trying to make a diagnosis. A good diagnostician will take a thorough history and physical and take skin samples for analysis.

Causes

It is unknown why some people who have rosacea suffer with this particular form of the disease. It is thought that the people who get granulomatous rosacea may be immunosuppressed, which means that the body’s ability to fight off infections is either absent or severely compromised. People who have shown symptoms of granulomatous rosacea may be particularly sensitive to the common triggers of rosacea, such as heat, chemicals, or bacteria.

Treatment

Granulomatous rosacea is a chronic condition that can be treated. It most often responds to the same methods of treatment as papulopustular rosacea, the term used to describe the outbreak of the more typical pustules that rosacea sufferers experience. Success has been experienced using isotretinoin, metronidazole, azelaic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Many physicians have reported success with prescribing antibiotics such as tetracycline or doxycycline, while others have found that the use of cordicosteroids, whether oral or topical, are particularly effective for this unusual form of the disease. As with other forms of rosacea, a trial and error method of treatment is usually the best way, though it may be frustrating for the patient, especially because effective treatment is no guarantee that a future outbreak will not occur. Understanding what your triggers are and making lifestyle changes to avoid them is the best way to avoid future outbreaks.

Unlike many other medical conditions, a diagnosis of Rosacea has real impact. Though it is possible for patients to take the diagnosis in stride by educating themselves and taking advantage of the available treatments, they also need to learn about the triggers that they should avoid. For many Rosacea patients the diagnosis brings life changes that can have an impact on the quality of their life, and some suffer real depression that keeps them from engaging fully in life. Fortunately, patients who take advantage of the many treatments available are able to leverage them to allow them a return to normalcy.

Things that People with Rosacea Should Avoid

From the most basic perspective, being diagnosed with Rosacea can mean making adjustments to your lifestyle. Having rosacea means that you are constantly at risk of having an outbreak, and a great deal of energy is devoted to avoiding that. The most common triggers of a Rosacea flare are stress and embarrassment, extreme heat or exertion, and exposure to the sun. The skin is also extremely sensitive to harsh chemicals, so finding cleansers and lotions that soothe rather than inflame is important. Specific foods can trigger a flare, as can alcohol and hot drinks. Heat in general is a big causative factor of rosacea outbreaks, and people who suffer from the condition are warned to stay away from saunas and hot baths, as well as extreme temperatures and wind.

Rosacea’s Impact on Self Esteem

Because Rosacea affects the appearance of the skin on the face, people are acutely aware of it, and are often self-conscious. Although a simple explanation of the condition would go a long way with friends, family and colleagues, many people are too embarrassed by their condition and instead choose to withdraw; many people report a feeling of worthlessness and a sense that the enjoyable part of their lives has passed them by. Because of these negative feelings, Rosacea can have an impact on social life, school life and work. Many people have reported skipping social engagements and missing work as a result of an outbreak. It is important for people who are diagnosed with Rosacea to realize the need for a good coping mechanism. Far too many people allow the disease to affect their overall outlook on life, and there have been reports of people contemplating suicide.

How to Avoid Rosacea Depression

It is important to remember that though Rosacea has no cure, it has many effective treatments. It is also good to keep in mind that it is a disease that afflicts many, many people, and you are not alone. Although it is normal for you to feel sorry for yourself, you need to remember that your life is much more than the way that your skin looks. Keeping things in perspective is important, as is remembering that Rosacea’s symptoms are cyclical – they will go away, and the more that you do to help yourself by seeking treatment and avoiding triggers, the better your skin will appear. If for no other reason, knowing that stressing about your condition can actually cause a flare is a great way to keep yourself from putting too much emphasis on the disease.

When in Doubt, Seek Help

There are many Rosacea support groups available to help you to cope with your condition. Whether it is your preference to actually meet up with people in person or to join an online Rosacea community, chatting with people who understand exactly how you feel can provide you with tremendous relief, and may also expose you to some treatment ideas that you had previously been unaware of.

Rosacea affects over sixteen million Americans every year, and more and more people are being diagnosed each year as the population ages. Rosacea is an inflammatory condition that affects the skin of the face; it is characterized by redness, flushing small pustules and telangiectasia, which are small broken capillaries. Although anybody can get rosacea, it is diagnosed in women three to four times more often than it does men. Although rosacea can cause embarrassment to both genders and all ages, women seem to be most affected by the appearance of these outbreaks on their faces. The good news is that there are several tips that can be used for makeup application that will minimize the appearance and visibility of rosacea’s symptoms.

Cleansing

All makeup application should begin with a thorough cleansing, and that is particularly true for those who have been diagnosed with rosacea. A gentle cleanser with soothing ingredients will not only smooth any roughness that you are experiencing, it will also help to protect your skin. Make sure that your cleanser contains no alcohol, and be careful not to rub your skin when you are cleaning.

Applicators

Special care should be taken in your choice of makeup applicators. There are special brushes that have antibacterial properties, and although it has not been proven that bacteria causes rosacea flares, there is some anecdotal information that it exacerbates breakouts.

Makeup

As is the case with your applicator, women who suffer from rosacea must be particularly selective with the type of makeup that you choose and its ingredients. You should stay from from heavy oils, irritants and perfumes, particularly when you are working around your eyes. Try to choose products that have multiple uses, as the fewer products you use, the lower your risk of an outbreak; always try to find products that contain sunscreen.

Getting Started

To counteract the redness of a rosacea flush, it is always a good idea to start with a yellow or green-tinted primer. This will help your makeup to last longer also. Be careful with the use of concealer, as it can call additional attention to a blemish, but if you need to hide a bump, use a concealer that is lighter than your natural skin tone. Always go for as light a touch as possible – applying foundation too heavily calls attention to your skin.

Color

Color must be thought out very carefully; though you want to add warmth, you need to avoid red and pink tones on your lips and on your cheeks. Bronzers are great products for women with rosacea, as it adds color but uses browns and neutral colors. Remember to use a light touch when applying your makeup – brushing or rubbing can irritate sensitive skin and invites an outbreak. Use a light lip gloss instead of heavy lipstick in order to complete the light clean look that is best suited to your skin condition.

Eyes

Because people with rosacea are vulnerable to ocular rosacea, be particularly careful to use extra gentle eye shadows and mascara. Never share your makeup products with anybody, and stay away from all waterproof products, which are much more difficult to remove and put you at risk of irritating your eyes when you are trying to remove the makeup at the end of the night. Your best bet is generally to use mineral-based products, and seek out those that are specially made for rosacea sufferers.

Cleanse Again!

Finally, at the end of the day be sure to give yourself a thorough, gentle cleansing again. Going to sleep with makeup on is not a good idea for anybody, but if you suffer from rosacea you want to do all that you can to avoid irritating your skin.

Although there are those who refer to Rosacea as adult acne, the two have far more differences than similarities. The similarities between the two chiefly lie in the fact that both are skin conditions that affect the space and are characterized by blemishes.

Teenagers vs Adults

Although acne can strike adults, it is most commonly seen in adolescents and teenagers, and is impacted by the skin’s cleanliness, hormones, stress and the food that you eat among other triggers. Rosacea can strike any age, but is most commonly seen in adults between the ages of thirty and sixty. It is particularly prevalent in women who are perimenopausal or menopausal.

Appearance of Rosacea vs Acne

Though both acne and rosacea cause raised red blemishes, there are some very specific differences between the two. Acne can take the form of both noninflammatory lesions, such as whiteheads and blackheads, and inflammatory lesions, which are red and painful pustules, nodules or cysts.Acne can appear on areas other than the face, and it is common to find the pustules on the back, chest and arms. It is generally accompanied by oily skin, and is characterized by pimples that are filled with dried sebum or a pus-like fluid. It is caused by pores of the skin getting clogged, and the pimples generally have either a white head or a black head. Both blackheads and whiteheads can be treated with medication, or a process of extraction can be performed by a dermatologist or skin specialist. Acne blemishes can leave scars, which is rarely the case with rosacea.

On the other hand, the red bumps that characterize rosacea are inflammatory, and are not filled with this type of fluid or topped with a blackhead – if they were to be expressed, a small drop of clear fluid would come out, but this would not make the blemish go away. Beyond the pustules, rosacea can also be seen in a variety of other forms. There is a characteristic redness or flushing that appears on the skin of people who have rosacea, particularly in response to embarrassment, heat, or exertion. Many people have tiny capillaries that appear on their cheeks and the tip of their noses, and in cases of advanced rosacea, people can develop large bumpy growths on their nose or ears. These generally appear after a long period of not treating the condition.

Treatment of Acne vs Rosacea

Acne treatments are focused on reducing the skin’s production of oil, eliminating surface bacteria and infections and hastening the production of skin in order to prevent blockages. This can be done with a variety of cleansers, medications that are applied directly to the skin and the blemishes, and antibiotics. The treatment of rosacea focuses initially on identifying the cause of the flare ups and avoidance of those triggers; the condition can also be mitigated by the use of special moisturizers and cleansers that are designed for the sensitivity of a rosacea sufferer’s skin, sunscreens, topical medications and antibiotics, and in some cases, laser surgery. For ocular rosacea, your physician may prescribe either oral antibiotics or eye drops.

Longevity of Acne vs Rosacea

Perhaps the most important difference between acne and rosacea is that acne is generally a temporary condition with a clear cause that will eventually be outgrown, and can be controlled with diligent treatment; rosacea is a condition that is permanent, and for which there is no cure. Though there are several lifestyle adjustments and treatments that can be used quite effectively, a person who has been diagnosed with rosacea will always have the fear of another flare.

Getting a Correct Diagnosis

Even the best general physician can have a difficult time distinguishing between acne and rosacea; because of this it is a good idea to seek the help of a dermatologist for a correct diagnosis.

Does your scalp itch? Do you find that you have something that seems like dandruff, but it’s actually a lot worse because it is coming from itchy, scaly patches on your scalp? If this describes what is happening to you, then you may have seborrheic dermatitis.

What is seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic condition that is most prevalent on the scalp, but can also appear on your face, your chest, your back, and any other section of your body that has oil glands. Although there isn’t a definitive cause for this inflammatory condition, many physicians and scientists believe that it is a reaction to too much oil being produced by the sebaceous glands combined with an overgrowth of a fungus that is prevalent in areas of the skin that have those glands. The fungus seems to make the skin in the area grow too fast, which is what forms the characteristic white and yellow scales to form. When these patches of overgrown scaly skin are seen on infants’ scalps it is referred to as cradle cap.

What are the symptoms of Seborrheic dermatitis?

The scaly patches can form over large areas of the skin, and can be found all over the body, but most commonly on the scalp. Many people develop patches inside their ears, the crease of their nose, their eyelids or eyebrows, or their chest. The patches generally itch, and can become infected if scratched too vigorously. There is often an inflamed, red appearance to the area, and many times people will lose hair where a patch of seborrheic dermatitis appears.

Treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Although there is no cure for seborrheic dermatitis and it can flare up at any time, there are several effective treatments that can minimize symptoms and, in some cases, make them go away for an extended period of time. There are some excellent medicated shampoos that are made to be applied after a vigorous scalp massage. These shampoos generally contain salicylic acid, ketoconazole, or coal tar. After loosening the patches, the shampoo is applied and left on for a period of time (usually about five minutes) to allow the medication to work. For stubborn cases, shampoos containing corticosteroids are also available. Some people find that their condition improves once the weather gets warm.

Treating Cradle Cap

For babies who have seborrheic dermatitis, a gentler approach needs to be taken. Most physicians advice a gentle scalp massage and brushing with a soft-bristled baby brush, then washing with mild soap or a baby-strength shampoo until the scales are gone. Some people report success from rubbing mineral oil or olive oil onto the scalp to break up the scales. This can also work for adults.

Alternative Treatments

Some people have found that using natural agents that kill yeast have helped them to control their seborrheic dermatitis. The theory behind this approach is that people who have seborrheic dermatitis have a sensitivity to yeast that other people don’t have. The most popular natural treatment available for killing the yeast is the use of tea tree oil, which has proven to be somewhat effective. Because the oil is so powerful, it generally needs to be used in a watered down form; many people add tea tree oil to their everyday shampoo.

Another approach that some people have reported success with has been taking fish oil supplements. This raises the level of omega-3 fatty acids in your system. Though medical science has not been able to determine why this might be helpful, since taking the acids is healthy under any circumstances, there is no reason not to try it.

Although seborrheic dermatitis can be unsightly and embarrassing, it is generally easily diagnosed and can be kept under control with a minimum of effort. If you are not sure about your symptoms, be sure to check with your physician or dermatologist.

If Rosacea is a new diagnosis for you, you are probably overwhelmed with questions. What is this illness? How many other people have it? Why did I get it? How do I deal with it? Will it get worse as I get older? Although many people are not familiar with Rosacea, it is a common skin condition. Though there are many questions as to what causes the skin to become so flushed and inflamed, or why the pustules or broken blood vessels that characterize the condition come, there are a lot of things that are known as well; educating yourself about your condition is the best way to make sure that you look and feel your best.

What Causes Rosacea?

There are many theories as to the cause of Rosacea. Some people believe that it is a symptom of a condition of the vascular system; this would explain both the broken capillaries and the flushing that is so prevalent. Some physicians believe that it is caused by a mite that lives on the surface of the skin, and others believe that it is caused by a bacteria or fungus. The theories are as varied as are the available treatments.

Who Gets Rosacea?

Rosacea affects men and women, young children and senior citizens. There is no way to predict who will have an outbreak of rosacea, although there is some evidence that it runs in families. The first symptoms that appear are generally a tendency to flush or blush. Shortly after this symptom, small blood vessels tend to appear on the cheeks and face of the person who is afflicted. As the skin becomes more sensitive, you will probably start to find small red bumps on the face as well. Some people also develop symptoms in the eyes – this is called ocular rosacea. People who develop Rosacea are more likely to have fair skin and light colored eyes and hair. It tends to show up more frequently in adults, particularly in women who are going through menopause.

Will Rosacea Get Worse as I get Older?

Many people think that Rosacea is a progressive illness whose symptoms deepen as they age. In fact, for those people who educate themselves about their own triggers and the treatments that work for them, Rosacea symptoms can be kept very much in control. It is only those who choose to ignore their condition and who don’t follow a treatment regimen whose symptoms worsen. Rosacea is a cyclical condition; its symptoms are triggered by known environmental factors that can be avoided. Being diagnosed as early as possible is important so that you can start avoiding skin products that irritate your skin and start to make lifestyle changes. Staying away from spicy or hot foods or drinks and alcohol, being smart about sun exposure and diligently using sunblock, avoiding too much strenuous exercise and stress are all keys to avoiding a rosacea breakout. Likewise, seeking the treatments and drugs that are available for those who have been diagnosed with Rosacea can make sure that the condition stays well under control and does not worsen.

Ignoring your Rosacea Symptoms

For those who do choose to continue living life as they had before, ignoring the warnings and contraindications provided to them by their physicians and foregoing any of the excellent medications and treatments that are available to keep rosacea outbreaks under control, the future can indeed show a worsening of your symptoms. Most people are familiar with the bumps and lumps that many older men tend to get on their noses and ears. These growths are symptoms of late stage Rosacea that has gone untreated, and it is called rhinophyma. Though this condition is often seen, it is largely preventable by pursuing treatment.

Because Rosacea is most commonly diagnosed in adults between the ages of thirty and fifty, it is generally considered to be an adult disease. Unfortunately, rosacea can occur at just about any age, including very young children. Rosacea has been diagnosed in children as young as toddler age, but is most commonly discovered in children at the age of six. The symptom that is most prevalent in children is flushing. Rosacea in children can easily be misdiagnosed, not only because its incidence is so uncommon, but also because it is so often thought to be something else. If Rosacea runs in your family, it’s important to get it diagnosed quickly in your child in order to begin the correct treatment, because Rosacea can lead to serious complications in children.

The Difficulties Diagnosing Rosacea in Children

One of the most difficult aspects of diagnosing Rosacea in young people is that its symptoms mimic so many other conditions that are more common in kids. Unless parents are specifically aware of Rosacea through their own experience, they tend to ignore the Rosacea flush as a symptom – most just think that their child blushes easily, and may even think it is cute. When children have Rosacea symptoms that manifest on the skin, it is often thought to be baby acne, a food allergy, or eczema. Parents will try such remedies as changing their detergent, removing known allergens such as strawberries, and apply lotions in an attempt to solve the problem.

Rosacea Face – Rosacea in toddlers

Sometimes Rosacea appears in toddlers as what is termed rosacea face. The cheeks are prone to flushing bright red and are often known to get patches of red that appear to be swollen; small white bumps often appear on the skin as well. Parents need to be particularly careful about the treatments they use because lotions that can help with other skin conditions can actually make rosacea outbreaks worse.

Symptoms of Ocular Rosacea in Children

It is usually only when the symptoms of Ocular Rosacea appear that parents finally take the child to the pediatrician. In kids, the eyes are where Rosacea is not only most commonly found, but also where it can do the most damage. By the time Rosacea is diagnosed in children, they have usually already been complaining of the symptoms for a while, and their vision has often already been compromised. The symptoms of Ocular Rosacea in children are red, itchy eyes and bumps around the eyelids that people mistakenly believe are styes. If your child has frequently complained of itchy eyes, it is a good idea to get their vision checked, particularly if you have noted other symptoms such as small pustules, flushing, or if there is any family history of Rosacea. By the time Ocular Rosacea in children gets diagnosed, there has often already been a significant decrease in vision.

Recommended Physician Rosacea Treatment for Children

The treatments that physicians recommend for children’s rosacea are often very mild, and are designed to provide relief in the simplest way possible so as not to disrupt the child’s life. It is important to keep kids out of the sun as much as possible, and children with Rosacea should always have on a strong sunblock before going outdoors. If older children are diagnosed with Rosacea they can try using acne treatments, but they need to use caution as these can dry out a Rosacea sufferer’s skin. Pediatricians sometimes prescribe antibiotics or steroids for severe cases.

Children with Rosacea – Self Esteem Issues

Perhaps the biggest concern that arises for children who have Rosacea is teasing from other children. Rosacea is a major cause of embarrassment for all ages, and has been traced to severe problems of self-esteem. It is important that parents are aware of this complicating factor so that they can be prepared if their child starts showing signs of reluctance about attending social events or even about going to school. Teachers should also be advised of the problem so that they don’t make innocent comments about flushing or blushing.

Generations ago, pregnant women were unaware of the dangerous impact that the foods they ate, the medications they took, and the environment they were exposed to could have on their pregnancies. By contrast, there is an enormous amount of information available today to make sure that women’s bodies are well set-up for pregnancy.

Having this information helps tremendously with protecting the unborn from toxins. Women with Rosacea have special considerations; for those who have already been diagnosed prior to getting pregnant, they have to determine whether any medication they’re taking could have a negative impact on their ability to get pregnant, or could harm the baby they are trying to conceive. For women who develop Rosacea during pregnancy, they are not only faced with learning about a new illness in the midst of their pregnancy, but are also unable to avail themselves of many of the available treatments.

Many women have their first outbreak of Rosacea during their pregnancy. This can be particularly distracting for the mother, who already has enough on her mind, and is now faced with a condition that she learns she may have with her for the rest of her life. It is unclear whether Rosacea appears during pregnancy because of stress, because of a hormonal trigger or if its appearance is coincidental. There is a specific, rare form of Rosacea called rosacea fulminans that has been definitively linked to pregnancy. Rosacea fulminans is the most extreme form of rosacea. Fortunately, this condition can be safely treated with corticosteroids and does tend to disappear within six months of delivery.

If you have already been diagnosed with Rosacea and are planning to have a baby, it is a good idea to discuss treatment options with both your dermatologist and your ob/gyn practitioner before you try to get pregnant so that both can advise you – be sure to give them both some time, as they both may need to do research; although we assume that doctors know everything about every medicine, dermatologists do not specialize in pregnancy, and obstetricians know little about skin medications. Topical treatments such as metronidazole and azelaic acid are generally considered to be safe for continued use because only small amounts are used and they are minimally absorbed, but check with your doctor to be sure. Oral medications require extreme caution, and isotretinoin (Accutane) is definitely known to cause birth defects, so be sure to stop this medication completely before conception and throughout your pregnancy. Treatments that pregnant women turn to as replacements for existing medical regimens include the light and laser therapy and red light therapy.

Many women choose to exercise an abundance of caution during pregnancy and discontinue all medications. For those women, stress-relief techniques such as meditation, pregnancy massage and yoga have proven particularly beneficial. There are also many natural ointments and topical treatments that seem to help, including tea tree oil, cucumbers (both as food and in a crème form that can be applied to the face), golden chrysanthemum cream and an ointment made of licorice. Many women recommend the use of Cetaphil cleanser during pregnancy to provide cooling relief, while others make themselves masks made of oatmeal. Regardless of whether you choose to use any of these, be sure to drink plenty of water, as staying hydrated is good for your skin and for your body, and for your baby too.

The good news is that many women find that the pregnancy hormones coursing through their body provide them with a relief from their symptoms – in fact some women with Rosacea say that their skin has never looked as good as it did when they were pregnant. For others whose symptoms get worse, take comfort in the knowledge that many people assume that the redness in your cheeks is just a ‘pregnancy glow’, and bear in mind that there is an end in sight, and it includes life with your new baby.
