Generations ago, pregnant women were unaware of the dangerous impact that the foods they ate, the medications they took, and the environment they were exposed to could have on their pregnancies. By contrast, there is an enormous amount of information available today to make sure that women’s bodies are well set-up for pregnancy.

Having this information helps tremendously with protecting the unborn from toxins. Women with Rosacea have special considerations; for those who have already been diagnosed prior to getting pregnant, they have to determine whether any medication they’re taking could have a negative impact on their ability to get pregnant, or could harm the baby they are trying to conceive. For women who develop Rosacea during pregnancy, they are not only faced with learning about a new illness in the midst of their pregnancy, but are also unable to avail themselves of many of the available treatments.

Many women have their first outbreak of Rosacea during their pregnancy. This can be particularly distracting for the mother, who already has enough on her mind, and is now faced with a condition that she learns she may have with her for the rest of her life. It is unclear whether Rosacea appears during pregnancy because of stress, because of a hormonal trigger or if its appearance is coincidental. There is a specific, rare form of Rosacea called rosacea fulminans that has been definitively linked to pregnancy. Rosacea fulminans is the most extreme form of rosacea. Fortunately, this condition can be safely treated with corticosteroids and does tend to disappear within six months of delivery.

If you have already been diagnosed with Rosacea and are planning to have a baby, it is a good idea to discuss treatment options with both your dermatologist and your ob/gyn practitioner before you try to get pregnant so that both can advise you – be sure to give them both some time, as they both may need to do research; although we assume that doctors know everything about every medicine, dermatologists do not specialize in pregnancy, and obstetricians know little about skin medications. Topical treatments such as metronidazole and azelaic acid are generally considered to be safe for continued use because only small amounts are used and they are minimally absorbed, but check with your doctor to be sure. Oral medications require extreme caution, and isotretinoin (Accutane) is definitely known to cause birth defects, so be sure to stop this medication completely before conception and throughout your pregnancy. Treatments that pregnant women turn to as replacements for existing medical regimens include the light and laser therapy and red light therapy.

Many women choose to exercise an abundance of caution during pregnancy and discontinue all medications. For those women, stress-relief techniques such as meditation, pregnancy massage and yoga have proven particularly beneficial. There are also many natural ointments and topical treatments that seem to help, including tea tree oil, cucumbers (both as food and in a crème form that can be applied to the face), golden chrysanthemum cream and an ointment made of licorice. Many women recommend the use of Cetaphil cleanser during pregnancy to provide cooling relief, while others make themselves masks made of oatmeal. Regardless of whether you choose to use any of these, be sure to drink plenty of water, as staying hydrated is good for your skin and for your body, and for your baby too.

The good news is that many women find that the pregnancy hormones coursing through their body provide them with a relief from their symptoms – in fact some women with Rosacea say that their skin has never looked as good as it did when they were pregnant. For others whose symptoms get worse, take comfort in the knowledge that many people assume that the redness in your cheeks is just a ‘pregnancy glow’, and bear in mind that there is an end in sight, and it includes life with your new baby.

Although there are a variety of medically-approved treatments for Rosacea, including oral and topical treatments, light therapies, and avoidance of the events and incidents that can trigger a flare, many people have found relief from using alternative botanical treatments, particularly when they are used in combination with traditional medicine. Though none of these are necessarily supported by medical science, and what works for one Rosacea sufferer may not work for another, some of them may be worth trying to see if they work for you. Be sure to check with your physician to be certain that there are no contraindications with any medication or treatment you may be using.

Golden Chamomile Cream

Containing the extract of a plant whose latin name is Chrysanthellum Indicum, this cream has been getting a great deal of attention after having shown promising results when used by Rosacea sufferers. There has been evidence that its success is tied to its ability to strengthen capillaries. It was particularly effective in combating overall redness, and had minimal negative
side effects.

Licorice

Licorice has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine and as a natural remedy for a variety of inflammatory conditions. It is thought that the flavonoids, as well as a major chemical component called glycyrrhizin, are what gives the sweet roots its healing properties. In the treatment of Rosacea, licorice extract is applied topically, although it can also be taken orally for the treatment of other inflammatory conditions.

Green Tea

Green Tea has been credited as curative for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including Rosacea. Going far beyond reducing redness, a study involving a large group of patients who had visible pustules and bumps used a cream made of a highly concentrated green tea extract found they’d experienced a marked improvement in the appearance of their skin after just one month of use. It’s also been shown that applying green tea extract to the face immediately after an IPL treatment can help the effectiveness of and recovery from the treatment.

B3/Niacinamide Cream

This treatment is used as a moisturizer and improved skin barrier in many skin conditions, including Rosacea. It is thought to add moisture and reduce irritation.

B Vitamins

There have been some studies that have shown that a lack of riboflavin can contribute to Rosacea flares. This is specifically tied to research showing that Demodex mites, which are found in much higher quantities on the skin of Rosacea patients than on the skin of people without Rosacea, prefer to live in areas that are riboflavin-deficient.

Azoleic Acid

This cream acts as an antimicrobial and has shown signs of attacking bacteria on the face. Although there has been no connection between bacteria and Rosacea outbreaks, people who have used the cream report less redness and fewer pustule outbreaks.

Other Treatments

There are several other home remedies that have been cited as helping with itching, dryness and irritation. These include creating a mask of oatmeal, the use of herbal oils including Tea Tree Oil and Camphor Oil, anti-inflammatory herbs such as lavender and chamomile, and an Aveeno product that contains extract of the Feverfew plant.

Relaxation techniques

Although not botanical, it is worthwhile to mention some relaxation methods that also fall under the category of alternative treatments and that have shown themselves particularly effective at reducing stress, thus acting as proactive, preventative treatments. Rosacea patients have shown dramatic improvements in their stress levels after regularly attending yoga classes and receiving Reiki treatments. Meditation has also shown benefits, as have a variety of breathing techniques.

Nobody is quite sure how the myth started, but for the longest time it was believed that rosacea was a sign of alcoholism. Medical schools trained their patients to look for facial redness, tiny visible blood vessels and rhinophyma (third phase rosacea) as hallmarks of the disease, and when those characteristics were present they would then proceed to look for other signs of alcohol abuse. It has only been in the past few years that studies have shown this to be incorrect; though there is still no single cause or cure that has been identified, it has been definitively proven that the majority of people who get rosacea are not alcoholics, and many of them do not drink at all. Unfortunately, the image of W.C. Fields and his red face and disfigured nose have made it hard to shake the automatic connection that people make – when they see a flushed red face with telangiectasia on the cheeks, the bloodshot eyes that characterize ocular rosacea, or rhinophyma on the nose, many automatically jump to the conclusion that there is alcohol abuse going on, and that only adds to the stress that rosacea patients often suffer. Whether meeting people socially, applying for a job, or asking a potential love interest out on a first date, society’s misapprehension about rosacea and alcoholism can have a devastating effect.

Ironically, many people who have been diagnosed with rosacea have cut alcohol out of their lives entirely in an effort to prevent a flare; this is because there is an indisputable connection between drinking alcohol and rosacea flare-ups. Three out of every four rosacea patients who drink alcohol have reported that taking even a single drink is highly likely to cause a rosacea flare, with red wine most frequently named as the beverage that most frequently causes one. White wine comes in a close second, but don’t think that there’s something special about fermented grapes; beer, vodka, whiskey, rum, tequila, all have been named as catalysts to flushing, breakouts and other symptoms, though none to as great a degree as red wine. Just as sensitivities can vary based on which beverage is being consumed, the amount of alcohol that can be consumed before causing a flare differs from person to person; some people can’t even take a sip of an alcoholic beverage without seeing an almost immediate response, while others can have as many as two glasses of wine before symptoms tend to appear, sometimes not until a day later. There are many theories as to why alcohol affects rosacea sufferers in this way, but to date there has been no hard evidence.

Because drinking alcohol is such a norm at social gatherings, all too often when a person with rosacea refuses a drink at a party or limits themselves, people take it as another indication of a drinking problem, albeit one that the person is trying to address. The misplaced stigma of alcoholism only adds to the stress that a rosacea patient is already feeling, and that stress can even contribute to the flare that the patient was trying to avoid by skipping the alcohol in the first place. This may well be a factor in the high number of social events that rosacea patients report skipping entirely, as well as the general lack of self-esteem.

Rosacea Red and White wine

Some people who have rosacea have no problem with cutting out alcohol, while others find themselves unwilling to give it up entirely. For those who would still like to enjoy a drink with dinner or at a social gathering, it is advised that you try to avoid both red and white wine entirely, and be extremely aware of how much you’re drinking. Many rosacea patients have reported that if they make sure that they are well hydrated, having plenty of water before they drink alcohol and at least a full glass of water between drinks, it can be helpful.

It seems like every day there’s a different study being reported on the benefits and importance of exercise. Working out helps keep your weight down, improves the health of your bones, your cardiovascular system, even your mental state. But exercising presents unique challenges for people who have rosacea. Whether because of overheating, sweating, strain of exertion or a rush of adrenaline, exercise is a common trigger for flares. This does not mean that you need to stop exercising (or that you can use your rosacea as an excuse); in fact, studies have shown that most rosacea sufferers who work out every day don’t report exercise as a trigger. It’s those who exercise irregularly who have the biggest flare response, so it’s possible that if you’re not currently working out every day, you may want to consider introducing moderate daily exercise. Here are some tips for rosacea-friendly exercise.

Keep it cool

Whether you’re exercising inside or outside, these are words for rosacea patients to live by. Getting overheated by putting yourself into an environment that is too warm can bring on flushing. Exercise in an air conditioned gym, grab the treadmill that has the built-in fan, and make sure you have a small towel with you that you’ve soaked in cool water; you can use it to blot your face, or drape it around the back of your neck to keep yourself from overheating. If your workout takes you into the great outdoors, try to time it for when the sun is at its lowest –the early morning is when the air is coolest and the sun is lowest, and you’ll find that everything feels fresher, quieter and much more peaceful. It’s a great time for a walk or a run – but remember to put on your sunscreen before you head out.

Don’t Get Too Worked Up

A good cardiovascular workout is important, but if you have rosacea, you should stop going for maximum output; a good workout does not need to get your heart racing. Remember that rosacea is a condition that affects the blood vessels in your face; easing into your exercise routine avoids shocking your system and sudden dilation. If you sense that you’re overdoing it and feel your face getting warm, take a breather. Breaking your workout up into a few shorter fifteen minute workouts may be smarter for you. The same goes for weight lifting and strength training. If you’re grunting and straining, then you’re much more likely to bring on flushing and breakouts – lightening up your load will still keep your muscles toned, but with rosacea, you want to avoid the burn.

Stay Well Hydrated

Everybody should drink at least eight glasses of water a day, and rosacea sufferers need more water than the general public in order to keep yourself cool and reduce the chances of flushing or overheating. Adding exercise into the mix ups the ante on your need for fluids, so be sure that you have a container of water or sports drink with you, and make sure you keep drinking.

Swimming

If you’re looking for a great cardiovascular workout that doesn’t exacerbate your condition, get yourself to the pool! Swimming is really the perfect answer for rosacea patients. It provides a total body workout in an environment that keeps your body cool, and it is a great stress reliever. Check out your local gym or community center to see whether they have water aerobics classes, and if you’re a runner, look into deep water running; it will give you as good a workout (possibly better) as the miles you get outside, with no impact to your knees and joints, and it will reduce your chance of a flare.

Yoga

Yoga provides a great workout that is also a stress reliever. Contact your local yoga studio and ask the instructor which class they recommend for people who need to avoid heat or exertion. Though some rosacea patients say that even hot yoga classes don’t aggravate their condition, you may want to avoid it.

Everybody has heard of menopause, and many make jokes or are at least familiar with the image of a middle-aged woman, fanning herself and sweating profusely with a hot flash as she goes through “the change”. But what most people don’t realize is that one of the things that menopause can bring is rosacea, a condition that, once present, will likely stay with her for the rest of her life, or at least for many years.

Rosacea can affect almost anybody, but is most prevalent in fair-skinned people over the age of 30, and most commonly found in women. Rosacea sufferers often report trigger points, which are also known as tripwires, and those are often related in some way to heat. Common tripwires include sweating with exercise, eating spicy foods or hot weather, so it’s no surprise that for women going through menopause, not only can a hot flash be a tripwire, it may actually be the trigger to their very first rosacea flair.

Acne or Rosacea?

For a woman who is going through menopause, rosacea often comes as a particularly unwelcome surprise. They are already going through changes that can cause depression, anxiety and mood swings in addition to a variety of other physical manifestations that are difficult to deal with. Many will go through their initial flare up and assume that the breakouts that they’re seeing are acne; they will think that with a bit of extra face-washing or just waiting out a hormonal surge, this particular problem will go away. But as hot flashes continue and exacerbate the condition, most will end up seeking medical help from either their gynecologist or their dermatologist, and that’s when they find out that they’ve been hit with an illness for which there is no cure or end in sight.

There is never a good time to be diagnosed with rosacea, but for women going through menopause the timing is particularly difficult; their overall condition is characterized by mood swings, and depression is often a problem, which means that in addition to hot flashes, stress and anxiety may be present as well. Where rosacea sufferers are usually able to manage their disease by avoiding known triggers, hot flashes arrive unannounced and can’t be consciously avoided.

Rosacea Treatments For Women with Menopause

Many women who are diagnosed with rosacea during menopause receive a different treatment regimen than what’s prescribed for men or younger women who don’t have the additional hormonal complication, and this different approach may actually be just as effective – or possibly more so – than traditional treatments. This is in large part because a menopausal woman’s physician is primarily treating the symptoms of menopause rather than their rosacea, and that menopause treatment coincidentally helps with the skin condition by eliminating the trigger. When a woman presents with flushing, redness or a breakout that is exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations, her physician’s response will always be to treat the hormonal problem; they will prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and possibly antihistamines as well, both of which have anti-inflammatory benefits. Interestingly, a woman going through menopause may also be given a prescription for an anti-depressant, thus effectively eliminating two more of rosacea’s most common trigger points: depression and stress.

Although hot flashes will eventually go away, women with rosacea will continue to have flushing, burning and all of the other symptoms of their condition long after they have gone through the last stages of menopause. For those who had the symptoms prior to their hormonal shift, the hot flashes will simply have been an additional trigger, but for those women whose hot flashes signaled the onset of the disease, things may be more emotionally stressful. Women tend to think of menopause as a set of symptoms that will begin and, eventually, end, but because rosacea is likely to stay with them, they may need additional support and counseling. They also are less likely to have seen a dermatologist for their condition, so it may be only when their hormonal shifts end that they first turn to topical, dermatological solutions.

Light and laser therapies may actually offer the best hope to Rosacea sufferers, but there’s been very little clinical research done on either procedure, in large part because the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) doesn’t require this type of treatment to submit the same stringent documentation as medications. But dermatologists are learning more and more about the best way to use these devices, and have found that when used correctly, they can provide long lasting relief of rosacea’s symptoms for many of their patients. Let’s take a look at both.

What is Laser and Light Therapy used for?

Laser and light therapies can both be used for flushing, redness and dilated blood vessels, while laser therapy can also treat rhinophyma. Both treatments reach below the skin’s surface and make changes to the deeper tissue there, but laser therapy is more targeted then light therapy. The biggest problem right now with both of these treatments is that nobody’s sure how long their impact lasts, and they’re both expensive – and insurance does not cover them. But for patients who are willing to pay, they have definitely been shown to help a lot.

Pulsed Dye Laser

There are several different types of lasers that can be used, but the one that dermatologists report the most success with is the Pulsed Dye Laser, or PDL. Patients show a big improvement after their first treatment, and if they have a second treatment the impact is even greater – in one group of patients who were interviewed about their satisfaction, all sixteen were very pleased, and said that everything from flushing and burning to itching and overall redness had decreased. The PDL laser creates far more facial bruising then other laser technologies such as the KTP and nd:Yag lasers, and though at first bruising sounds like a bad thing, it turns out that the more bruising the treatment causes, the more effective it is, with a very noticeable long term difference in the amount of redness, burning and itching that the patient is left with. It’s not clear why this is the case, and patients need to decide for themselves whether short term bruising is worth it to them. Laser is also the best treatment for rosacea sufferers whose condition has progressed to include rhinophyma; the earlier the symptoms are treated, the better.

Advantages of Light Therapy

Light therapy is a newer technology; it does not use lasers and as a result its impact on the skin is more diffuse and less targeted. Although it doesn’t leave the same level of bruising behind, which is an advantage, the difference in intensity may make it less effective, as it seems that more treatments are needed, and not as many people get positive results as do with laser therapy. One advantage of light therapy is that it can be used for breakouts, which is not the case with the laser.

Best Candidates for Light Therapy

Not everybody is a good candidate for light or laser therapy, for a number of reasons. From a medical perspective, if you suffer from diabetes, have a tendency to scar or keloid or have clotting problems, your doctor will advise you against it. It also does not work for rosacea sufferers who are tan, and if you go out in the sun afterwards your symptoms will get worse. Physicians also report that they are sometimes hesitant to provide the treatment because patients think it is going to be a cure; there is no cure for rosacea, and though laser and light treatments can be helpful and improve quality of life for some, for others it has little or no impact, and for a few it can even make their symptoms worse.

How Much Does Light and Laser Therapy Cost?

Finally, as mentioned before, most insurance policies do not cover the treatments, and it can be expensive. Expect to pay approximately $500 per treatment (depending on where you live), and more than one treatment is generally required. No matter how many treatments you have, remember the effect will not be permanent; your symptoms will eventually return. Try the medications that your physician prescribes first and give them a fair shot before jumping to light or laser treatments, and if you do make the decision to have either procedure, make sure that your dermatologist has plenty of experience, not only so that they can properly advise you, but so that you can be assured that you’re in good hands.

If you already have your own techniques and there working for you, there is no need to change. For several men the daily challenge of shaving is a nightmare! Here are a few simple tips that can help men prevent irritation and possible flare ups.

Tip #1: Do not use a blunt Razor! Many sufferers do believe that electric razors work best to control irritation. Also take your time shaving as a “rough shave” may irritate the skin. In our view it’s important to invest in a quality razor to ensure a close shave on every occasion.

Tip #2: Are you using an excessive amount of shaving cream? Or is your shaving cream irritating your skin? It’s important to take these factors into consideration.

Tip #3: Use a small amount of non-oily moisturizer after your shave, this will help sooth and replenish the skin.

Tip #4: Avoid any after shave sprays which may sting and irritate the skin.
